「中山道ー野洲」シリーズ
絵師：杉田徹、彫師：北村昇一、摺師：古川元偉
今回ご紹介する作品は、アメリカを拠点に活動する
杉田氏と、京都で長年木版画制作に携わってきた
彫師：北村昇一、摺師：古川元偉による共同制作です。
杉田氏の原画が持つ、水彩画のような繊細な色彩や
表情を木版画ならではの技法によって一色ずつ丁寧
に彫り、摺り重ねて仕上げています。
普段、芸艸堂で木版画制作をお願いしている職人との
ご縁から作品を取り扱わせていただく事になりました。
作家の感性と、京都の伝統的な木版画技術。
それぞれの表現が一つの作品の中で重なり合うことで
独特の風合いを持った木版画が生まれています。
ぜひ、原画とはまた異なる、木版画ならではの色彩と
質感をご覧ください。

なお、杉田氏が現在活動されているアメリカへ戻られ
たため、今回は各作品1点ずつの取り扱いとなります。
絵師略歴 杉田 徹
滋賀県野洲市生まれ
京都教育大学美術科卒業、
京都精華大学版画科研究生修了、
サンフランシスコ·カリフォルニア州立大学
大学院修了。
コロラド州のグランドジャンクションでの教職を経て、
現在ディアブロ·バレー·カレッジ
（Diablo Valley College）教授。
1990年に日本を離れ、中南米と中近東の放浪の後、
サンフランシスコ·ベイエリアに活動の拠点を構える。
版画を中心に幅広いメディアで、アメリカを中心に
日本、ヨーロッパ、中南米での発表を続けている。
美術館所蔵作品はAchenbach Foundation of
Graphic Artsを含め多数。
絵本「Floating Lanterns & Golden Shrines」の
挿絵も担当。
カリフォルニア州ベイエリア、アルバニー市在住。
Toru Sugita
Born and raised in Japan, traveled extensively
throughout Latin America and the Middle East,
eventually becoming involved in the Bay Area
community as an artist and an art educator.
Toru received a MFA in printmaking
from San Francisco State University.
He illustrated the award-winning book,
“Floating Lanterns and Golden Shrines.”
His prints can be found in public collections
including the Achenbach Foundation
of Graphic Arts in the Fine Art Museum of
San Francisco.
In 2006 Toru moved to Grand Junction,
Colorado,where he focused on teaching
and multimedia collaborative works.
In 2009 he returned to the Bay Area
as a faculty member at Diablo Valley College,
Pleasant Hill, where he is in charge
of the printmaking programs.
Lives in Albany, California.
ITEM DETAIL
We are pleased to present new woodblock prints
by printmaker Toru Sugita in the Unsodo online shop.
The works featured here are the result of a collaborative project between Sugita,
who is based in the United States, and
Kyoto-based traditional woodblock print artisans Shoichi Kitamura,
who carved the blocks, and Motohide Furukawa, who handled the printing.
The delicate colors and watercolor-like qualities of Sugita’s original paintings
have been carefully translated into woodblock prints,
with each color carved into a separate block and
layered through repeated hand-printing.
Through our longstanding relationship with the artisans who regularly work
with Unsodo on woodblock print production,
we had the opportunity to offer these works through our shop.
The artist’s sensibility meets Kyoto’s traditional woodblock printing techniques.
By bringing these two forms of expression together in a single work,
the collaboration creates woodblock prints with a distinctive character and texture.
We invite you to discover the colors and tactile qualities unique to woodblock printing,
which offer a different experience from the original paintings.
As Sugita has now returned to the United States, each work will be available
in a single copy through Unsodo.
